"La Ferme des Bertrand" - French documentary directed by Gilles Perret and released in 2023.
Distinction: best documentary film awarded at the César 2025 ceremony.
Description
History of the peasant world on a farm in Mieussy (place called Quincy), 800 m above sea level over the Giffre valley, in Haute-Savoie, the film retraces the life of a farming family for 50 years thanks to the crossing of several documentary films.
The Bertrand farm, a dairy farm of a hundred animals in the middle mountains run by three unmarried brothers and their father, was filmed for the first time in 1972 by the camera of Marcel Trillat. As a neighbor, the director Gilles Perret dedicated in 1997 his first film to them, "Three brothers for a life." , while the three farmers are passing the farm to their nephew Patrick and his wife Hélène. In 2022, 25 years later, the director-neighbor takes over the camera to accompany Hélène who, in turn, will pass the hand to a new generation, to Marc, his son, and Alex, his son-in-law.
Through the words and gestures of people who have succeeded one another, the film mixes the three epochs and reveals life paths where work and transmission occupy a huge place: an intimate history, social and economic of a certain peasant world.
